Car hire locations in Poland

Warsaw-Chopin Airport is the main access point to Poland and offers the widest choice of car rental services. Here you will find all major international operators such as Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Sixt, housed in a dedicated terminal that is easily accessible by a free shuttle service. Due to the high demand, especially during the tourist season, advance booking is highly recommended.

Krakow airport, the country’s second most important airport, presents a particularly convenient situation: the counters of the rental companies are located directly in the arrivals terminal, allowing you to complete your rental paperwork within minutes of landing. The variety of vehicles available satisfies every need, from economical small cars to spacious SUVs, ideal for exploring the Lesser Poland region.

Wroclaw Airport is an excellent starting point for exploring Lower Silesia, one of the most fascinating regions of western Poland. The charter terminal, located just 10 km from the city centre, hosts major international operators in an easily accessible area. The airport’s strategic location near the border with Germany and the Czech Republic makes it particularly attractive for those planning a Central European itinerary. Prices are generally in line with those in Krakow, and vehicle availability is excellent even in the high season.

Finally, for those wishing to discover the beauty of the Baltic coast, Gdansk Airport is the optimal choice. The newly built car rental terminal offers modern and efficient services. A particular advantage of this airport are the more competitive rates compared to Warsaw, as well as the inclusion of the shuttle service to the city centre in the rental price.

Driving in Poland

Driving in Polish cities requires special attention to the Restricted Traffic Zones in the city centres and parking spaces, which are generally paid for in central areas. A peculiarity of Polish cities is the widespread presence of trams: it is essential to pay attention to their lanes and strictly respect their right of way.

The network of petrol stations is well distributed throughout the territory, but in more remote areas it is advisable not to wait until the tank is almost empty before filling up. Particular attention should be paid in rural areas to crossing animals, especially in the twilight hours.

Limits and regulations

To drive in Poland you need a valid driving licence, a green insurance card, proof of identity and, of course, the rental contract. Polish road regulations provide for well-defined speed limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside built-up areas, 120 km/h on express roads and 140 km/h on motorways.

Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road, and an important feature to remember is the requirement to have dipped headlights on 24 hours a day. The permitted blood alcohol level is very low, just 0.2 g/l, so it is advisable to avoid alcohol completely if you have to drive. Seat belts are compulsory for all passengers, without exception.

With regard to child safety, Poland applies very strict regulations on car seats. The use of appropriate restraint systems is mandatory for all children under 150 cm tall. Specifically:

As regards mandatory equipment, each vehicle must be equipped with a warning triangle, reflective jacket, first aid kit and fire extinguisher.

Rental companies generally provide all these items, but it is always a good idea to check if they are present when collecting the car.

Motorway tolls

The Polish motorway system is largely toll-based, with a toll system that includes both traditional cash or card payment and the electronic viaTOLL system for commercial vehicles. It is important to always keep your toll receipts until the end of your journey, as they may be requested in the event of checks.
